3 types of repairs for a cedar roof with defects and missing pieces

Cedar roofs require regular maintenance and repair because they are built with organic material (i.e. cedar wood), and not composite or other lab-fabricated material. They are prone to greater deterioration if not serviced professionally and regularly.

At Our Cedar Roofs, we take cedar roof care very seriously. Our priority is to ensure that we give as much life to your cedar roof as possible, by addressing any issues on time and with the right standards and procedures. Therefore, in this article, we will discuss 3 types of repairs that are crucial to the good standing of your cedar roof.

Repair 1

How to repair a cedar shake or shingle with a metal shim inserted under the defect

Issue: the shake or shingle is split, thus allowing water and other debris to enter in the crack and deteriorate the underlayment.

Fix: add a shim to provide a surface that prevents water from infiltrating and allows it to run off.

Details: “The dark corrosion resistant metal shim should be about 2 1/2″ wide and be about 1/2″ longer than the weather exposure of the product it is to repair. The bottom two corners should be bent down at a 45 degree angle to keep the shim from sliding out of repair. The shim should be slid all the way under the course to be repaired and out of sight. If well done, this type of repair should last as long as the roof.” (source: Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau)

Repair 2

Removing a damaged cedar shake or shingle from an existing roof

Issue: the existing shake or shingle is damaged (i.e. cracked, curled, too worn out, etc.).

Fix: remove the existing shake or shingle and insert a new one.

Details: “Pry up the shake to be removed and the shakes directly above  the shake to be removed so that the nail shafts and heads can be accessed under the shakes. Pull out or cut nails using hack saw blade saw, pry bar or slater’s ripper. Use hooks on the side of slater’s ripper or hole in the pry bar to hook nail heads under the shakes to pull the nails. The shake can then be pulled and wiggled out of the roof.” (source: Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau)

Repair 3

Replacing a missing shake in the roof field, ensuring that the nails are not exposed

Issue: a shake fell out and is missing due to elements.

Fix: add a new shake correctly and ensure the nails are not exposed to the elements.

Details: “Slide a shake fitted to the empty area into the empty area. Hold the shake 1/2″ below the final fitting position. Install two of the proper nails at a 45 degree angle at the butt of the covering course. Drive the shake up the last 1/2″, covering the nail heads, using a wood block against the shake butt to reduce splitting.” (source: Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau)
